FAQ

Our Focus & Principles

Fforest Fields is a place to slow down and clear your mind. Here in rural Radnorshire, we offer a much-needed space away from the fast pace of modern life. Our goal is simple: to give you the space to let go, look up at the stars, walk through the woodlands, and enjoy the things that bring peace to your mind, body, and soul.

We believe life should be lived fully, and that the open spaces and natural beauty of our land will help you feel more yourself, almost instantly. We’re proud to be part of this landcape’s story, and we hope you’ll fall in love with the rolling hills, the green valleys, and the wide-open moorlands.

Here, you’ll find freedom, enjoy the moments, not take life too seriously, sleep deeply, and experience the adventure of life under the Radnorshire sky.

Our approach to this land is rooted in respect and responsibility. We look after it. We tend to it with care and enthusiasm, to help ensure that it remains vibrant, productive and healthy for generations to come. We farm in a way that honours the geology, ecology and structural integrity of the biome and living landscape. understanding that what we give to the land will come back to us in abundance. The waterways, the soil, the air, the ecosystem - they are all a part of this living landscape, and we do our best to keep them pure and protected.

Our commitment is to leave this place better than we found it. We will pass it on with the same care and love that we’ve always had for it, knowing that every step we take on this land is a step towards a better, more connected future - for ourselves, for our family, and for you and your children.

Common Sense Camping

Location

We are based in Radnorshire, on the Eastern side of rural mid Wales. Our nearest town is Builth Wells, the crossroads of Wales. Our entrance is on the A481, which is a good A-road for towing.

The site is set in the middle of our 500-acre farm, with acres and acres of woodland to explore along well marked tracks, or between the fields and up onto the open moorland of Aberedw Hill which sits to the South.

This is a rural place, but there is plenty to do on the land and in the surrounding region. Find out more about the local area >>

Pitch Types

Pitch Types

We have four types of pitches on site. The campsite is set across two fields, and there are a variety of pitch types on each so that you can choose where to pitch on arrival based on your needs.

Electric / Non Electric All-Purpose: Our all-purpose pitches are really popular, they are suitable for all types of set up. They are made of a fine gravel so they drain well. Tents using them may want to bring an additional groundsheet. All stays of 7 nights or over will go on one of our All-Purpose or Hardstanding Pitches to protect our grass for other guests.

Electric / Non Electric Hardstanding:
Our Hardstanding pitches are fantastic and are suitable for all types of set up. They are made of a hard gravel so they drain well. While they are harder, tents can still use them but may want to bring an additional groundsheet/carpet. All stays of 7 nights or over will go on one of our All-Purpose or Hardstanding Pitches to protect our grass for other guests. Some guests like to use rock pegs on our hardstanding pitches.

Electric Grass:
Our grass pitches are well-drained and spacious and are suitable for most set ups apart from twin-axel, motorhomes or large campervans. There are grass electric pitches across the two fields, some tucked away and some in the open field. We limit stays on our grass pitches to 6 nights, if you'd like to stay longer then we'll pop you onto a all-purpose or hardstanding pitch.

Non Electric Grass:
We have lots of fabulous non-electric grass pitches across the site, some away from the facilities with wide open views, others tucked beside the stream or near to the reception. You'll be spoilt for choice :)

Our Yurts are set beside the Round Lake and have fabulous views across the valley. Find out more on our yurt page.

Land & Lake Safety

At Fforest Fields, we are committed to ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience for all visitors. However, please note that the responsibility for safety lies with the visitor. By exploring our farm, waterways, trackways, lakes, and surrounding areas, you agree to take full responsibility for your actions and decisions while on site. We encourage everyone to exercise caution and be aware of the environment around them.

General Safety Guidelines:
1. Personal Responsibility: Visitors are responsible for their own safety at all times. Please assess your own abilities and the conditions around you before proceeding with any activities.
2. Supervision: Children and vulnerable individuals should be supervised at all times. Parents and guardians must ensure that children follow the safety guidelines and are kept under control.
3. Hazard Awareness: Be aware that Fforest Fields, while beautiful and welcoming, is a working farm and natural environment. It contains potential hazards such as uneven ground, moving machinery, livestock, and natural elements that may pose risks. Please remain alert and cautious at all times.

Farm and Trackways:
1. Trackways: The farm has a network of tracks and trails, which are generally firm and stable. However, some areas may be uneven, muddy, or slippery, particularly after rain. Visitors are advised to wear sturdy footwear and remain cautious when navigating these areas.
2. Vehicles and Machinery: Please be aware that farm vehicles, machinery, and livestock may be in operation on or near the trackways. Always stay on marked trails and avoid approaching any vehicles or animals unless specifically authorised to do so.

1. Swimming in the Long Lake: Visitors are welcome to use the long lake for swimming. However, solo swimming is prohibited between November and March. During this time, the lake can be cold, unpredictable and conditions may change quickly. You may swim responsibly, in a pair or more.

3. Natural Spring-Fed Lake: The long lake is a natural, spring-fed body of water. While the water is generally fresh and beautiful, it is not a managed environment and may be subject to seasonal changes. At times, you may encounter weeds, duck mite, or other natural elements in the water. While most swimmers enjoy the lake without issues, please be aware of these conditions and swim at your own risk.
4. No Lifeguards: There are no lifeguards on duty at the lake. Visitors must take responsibility for their own safety when swimming, and should always be mindful of the water conditions and their own swimming ability.
5. Water Quality: The lake is naturally sourced and maintained by the environment. While the water quality is typically excellent, seasonal changes can affect water clarity and plant life. Please be mindful of any potential risks posed by sudden shifts in conditions.

General Guidelines for Water Activities:
1. Water Safety Equipment: We strongly recommend the use of appropriate water safety equipment such as flotation devices, especially for those who are not confident swimmers. Children should always wear suitable floatation aids when near the water.
2. Weather Conditions: Before swimming or engaging in any water activities, check the weather conditions and be aware of the water temperature, as it can vary seasonally. Cold temperatures, especially in the winter months, can affect your ability to swim comfortably and safely.
3. Swimming Restrictions: Do not swim if you feel unwell or if weather conditions, such as storms or strong winds, are present. Always check local weather alerts before entering the lake.

Atmosphere & Seasons

The land is between 700 - 1200ft elevation, set amid the rolling hills of Radnorshire. The nature of the landscape here leads to some interesting weather patterns. The sunshine is always welcome here at any time of the year, in summer that may mean hazy days, drier streams and endless greens in all directions, in the winter it can mean crisp, with mist in the valleys with very cold moments in the shade.

Rain keeps everything green here, and the weather severe at times but mostly it is just really telling of the season. We tend to get our spring later than the low country, and nights can get a bit nippy at almost any time of year.

The way we are set in the hills means that we believe the land has sunny disposition, with protection from the Cambrian Mountains and The Brecon Beacons.

We try to cultivate a really happy-go-lucky atmosphere on site, especially in regards to the weather. It's peaceful with the fun of the goings on of a rural site where children and adults find adventures in lakes, hiding in woodlands and by climbing trees.

We understand that forecasts can be unnerving sometimes but we have spent the last 30 years making this a place that works in all weathers.

Complaints & Concerns

Most problems, if there are any, result from a misunderstanding that has escalated. We want to work with you to help you have the most fabuous stay here, but the place isn't for everyone and sometimes we can get things wrong. Sometimes while on holiday little things can become big things quickly, most of the time we try to remind our guests that most problems can be fixed or mitagated.
We do take complaints seriously, and would much rather you spoke to us about it so we could help find the right solution.
If a blasting review is more your style, then we understand but it stings for much longer as you can imagine.
